One of the most popular and widespread game fish along the North Carolinaf Coast, red drum (commonly referred to as redfish) are known for their excellent fighting ability, as well as the many ways they can be caught. Because the red drum occurs in a wide variety of locales, fishing methods vary dramatically, but most involve shallow water techniques. Casting, surf fishing, trolling and fly-fishing are all common and effective methods. Sight fishing, where anglers visually spot the fish before casting, is an especially popular technique.. Where found: Occurring most often over sand and sandy mud bottoms in coastal waters and estuaries, red drum are both an inshore and offshore species.
Size: The all-tackle record for red drum is a 94-pound, 2-ounce fish caught off North
Carolina. The fish was reported to be 53 years old.
Remarks: The red drum is the state saltwater fish for North Carolina. Ten of the top 16
largest red drum were caught off the coast of this state
